Obituary of Carol B. Griggs

Carol Bliss Griggs, 69, of Alpine, NY passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of August 17, 2023. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on August 14, 1954, the daughter of Theodore and Jane Bliss. Carol attended St. James Catholic Church in Trumansburg, NY and was an active member of the church choir. Carol studied and worked in the fields of archaeology, geology, and dendrochronology. Her work extended to Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, and parts of Asia. Within the United States her work ranged from the mid-west to the Great Lakes and all over the state of New York. Carol earned her Ph.D from Cornell University, where she worked as a Senior Research Associate in Dendrochronology for 29 years. Carol loved the outdoors, including flower gardening, camping, and hiking; she provided weather data to the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network every day for 14 years. Carol also played fiddle and loved music. She is survived by her dedicated husband of 38 years, Bill Griggs; her daughter Katie Fry of Marshall, NC; her 3 sons Thomas Griggs, Michael Griggs, and Francis Griggs; her three siblings Steve Bliss, Andy Bliss, and Nancy Byrd; six grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews. Carol was predeceased by her father, Theodore Bliss (2008), and her mother, Jane Bliss (2019). Carol was loved by everyone who knew her and will be sorely missed. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, August 25, 2023 from 10:00-11:00 am in The Link at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, 905 N. Decatur St., Watkins Glen, NY. Her funeral mass will follow at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
