Obituary of Robert Burnside
Robert E. Burnside 07/28/1919 - 01/02/2012
Bob was born in Sidney, NY and spent his youth in Red Creek, NY. He worked briefly for Curtis Wright Aeronautical Corp as an aircraft mechanic before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1942. He served aboard the USS Hancock (CV-19) until 1946, when he returned to finish his college education at Oswego State College. He worked briefly for Ingersoll-Rand and taught at Northside High School before acquiring a position with the newly formed Xerox Corporation. He was always very proud to be among the first employees to occupy offices in the headquarters tower in Rochester. He would later bring his incredible people and training skills to Kodak. Upon retiring he moved to Watkins Glen, NY, where he would serve as a Schuyler County Legislator and Town of Dix Councilperson. He was a 26 year volunteer with RSVP and also served on volunteer committees related to Cornell Cooperative Extension, Schuyler County Planning Commission, Schuyler County Housing Council, Schuyler County Mental Health, RSVP Advisory Council Office for the Aging, Child Abuse Task force, Schuyler County Historical Society, Moreland Grange and Moreland Presbyterian Church. In addition he helped with the school lunch program and fundraising efforts related to the Lake Country Players and Italian-American Festival. He was an active member in the American Legion, at one time filling the positions of Chaplain and Commander, and a member of the Elks and Moose Clubs. For three years, Bob shared his war experiences with the Horseheads Middle School students during World War II Teach-In Day. Bob was a great dad and husband, kind, caring and very patient. An amazing man who in later years through a positive attitude overcame many health issues. He thoroughly enjoyed being with people and would often visit the local nursing home and offer company to those in need. He was always ready with a quick joke or two for anyone that would listen. He will also be remembered for his love of anything related to trains and his yearly vegetable gardens. The whistle has blown and he has boarded a great steam train bound for heaven, we will all miss you. Bob is survived by his wife Beverly, sons Robert, Scott, Steve, David DeMayo and sister Norma West as well as many extended family members. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Vedder and Scott, Inc. Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY on Friday, January 6, 2012 from 1 PM to 3 PM. His funeral and committal service will be held following visitation at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, one may donate to Hospice Care of the Southern Tier or to a Charity on one's choice.
