Obituary of Alice Joyce Haughey

Alice Joyce Haughey, 82, of Watkins Glen, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 3, 2018 with her loving family by her side. She was born in Montour Falls, NY on February 27, 1936 the daughter of the late John A. Haughey and Geraldine S. Haughey. She is survived by her brother, Jack Haughey (Patricia) of Corning; sisters, Elizabeth Suits, Susan Garrett (Tim), and Mary Jo Haughey all of Florida; her many cherished nieces and nephews; and by her cousin, Judy Phillips of Watkins Glen. Alice Joyce graduated from Watkins Glen Central School in 1954 and Arnot Ogden Memorial School of Nursing in 1957 where she was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After working one year as an OR nurse at Schuyler Hospital, she worked at a hospital in Florida as a "Yankee Girl". She returned home after one year, unable to tolerate the discrimination in the South. While working weekends at Schuyler Hospital, she attended Elmira College, studying Liberal Arts to "broaden her horizons". She was awarded a full grant to Syracuse University where she earned a B.S. in Nursing Education in 1961. Alice Joyce continued her education with post graduate courses at the University of Rochester and Ithaca College while working weekends at Schuyler Hospital. Later, she served as a Public Health nurse for Schuyler County and then became a supervisor in Public Health working for the State of New York, located in Utica, NY. Alice Joyce returned to Watkins Glen and worked at Willard in their outpatient clinic and supervised psychiatric home care until her M.S. no longer allowed her to work. At that time Alice Joyce embarked on a new career of community service as a volunteer in Watkins Glen. When becoming home bound, she tutored children and adults in her home and encouraged them to continue their education. The family would like to thank Alice Joyce's caregivers, especially Lisa Reed. Appreciation is expressed to her loving friends, notably Elaine Dahl, Deacon Tom Ruda, and Dr. Calderone who provided decades of wonderful care and support. Lastly, we thank the dedication, devotion and expertise of the staff at Schuyler Hospital, particularly Dr. Benjamin Saks. For all of those who knew Alice Joyce, the lady with the purest heart and kindest soul, let us celebrate her life on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 in the Link at Saint Mary's of the Lake Church from 12-2 pm, immediately followed by a service in the church. Please join us for an after service reception at Alice Joyce's home, 407 5th St., Watkins Glen, NY. Interment will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In the spirit of her lifelong love of education, please honor her with donations to the WGHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, 301 12th St., Watkins Glen, NY 14891-1633.
