Obituary of John T. Callahan

John Thomas Callahan (Jack), 91, of Montour Falls, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on August 21, 2018. Jack was born in Newark, New Jersey to Thomas Joseph Callahan and Margaret (Stillman) Callahan on September 30, 1926. He and his family relocated to this area when he was three years old. Jack enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 and served in the WWII Pacific campaign on the USS LST 961. After the war, he returned home and was employed at Corning Glass Works. He retired from there in 1984 as a Furnace Construction Supervisor. A lifetime member of the National Geographic Society, Jack and his wife, Shirley were lifelong world travelers. He was a voracious reader of history, naming his beloved poodle "Theodore Roosevelt, II', loved building model airplanes, boats, Seneca Lake, studying his Irish family genealogy and assisting others with genealogy research. Jack is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley (Mickel), his children; Ruth, Terry (Lisa), Jane, and Patricia; 7 granddaughters; 5 great grandchildren; sister, Kathryn Agnes Nastanovich; sister and brother-in-law, Fay & Gene Lewis, sister-in-law, Helen Callahan; sister-in-law, Mary Anne Stout, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins here and in Ireland. He was predeceased by his son, Matthew; great-granddaughter Lillian Shirley; his parents; brothers, Thomas, Larry; sister, Patricia; brother-in-law, Robert Stout, and brother-in-law Robert Nastanovich. Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler County Historical Society, or CareFirst Hospice Services. The family extends their gratitude to the staff of CareFirst for their kind and sensitive support of Jack and his family during his final days. A graveside memorial service will be held on Sunday September 9, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Montour Cemetery, Mill St. (upper entrance). Family and friends are invited to join. Arrangements are by Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, Montour Falls.
