Obituary of Iona Tanner
Iona A. "Onie" Tanner, 82, of Odessa, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at home. She was born in Burdett on July 6, 1933, the daughter of the late Leon and Louise (Dunbar) Sherrer. Onie graduated from Odessa Montour High School, where she met her future husband her senior year. Mrs. Tanner was a member of the Odessa Wesleyan Church for many years, where she served on the church board, taught Sunday school, and was the church pianist. Onie drove school bus for OMCS for over thirty years, where she was known as "Mrs. Tanner", "Ma" or "AJ" to all the student riders. She was also a substitute postal carrier for Odessa. She was predeceased by her husband George A. Tanner on May 28, 2012.
She is survived by her loving children, Pat (Henry) Fraser of Alpine, Lois (Brian) Hubbell of Alpine, and Joanne Tanner of Odessa; grandchildren, Joyce (Kevin) Matthews, Daniel (Vicki) Fraser, Laurie (Brian) McCoon, Scott (Hannah) Hubbell, Jason (Ali) Hubbell, John (Melinda) Dorn, and Eric (Chainna) Dorn; thirteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and by her beloved cat, Tiger. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to Kay Goossen and Mary Hill for their loving care of Onie during her illness.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, April 29, 2016 from 5-8 pm at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls. A calling hour will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10-11 am at the Odessa Wesleyan Church, 304 Church St., Odessa. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am with burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Odessa Wesleyan Church or the American Cancer Society.
