Obituary of Charles Urban
Charles E. Urban, 94, of Hector and formerly of Millport, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 at Robert Packer Hospital. He was born in Corning on January 14, 1921, the son of the late Michael and Susanna Urban. He graduated from Corning High School. On October 9, 1944, he married the former Helen Podleski in Corning.
Mr. Urban was a machinist and foreman at Shepard Niles Hoist & Crane for over 41 years, retiring on April 1, 1983. He was a communicant of St. Mary's of the Lake Church in Watkins Glen, and a member of the Mechanics Club and Elks Club. Charlie, as he was known to his many friends, was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing and life at his 'Castle' on the lake. He loved to regale his family and friends with tall tales, card games and practical jokes. On a more serious side, he was a man who was active, vibrant, and full of life and strong in his faith. He had a proud career in the crane and hoist industry and assisted with all types of mechanical and technical support to those who sought him out. He held a great passion for all his family and a special love towards animals. A member of the "Greatest Generation", he was proud to have served his country in the Navy during WWII. Life is an immeasurably better place because he was here.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Patricia Giulino of Arlington, MA; his son, Gary (Judy) Urban of Hector; five grandchildren, Jennifer Kelleher, Erika Cannon, Michael, Katherine and Erin Urban; four great grandchildren, Jordan and Braeden Cannon, Natalia and Giovanna Kelleher. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Helen in 2009, a son Michael in 2011, and sisters Mary Close in 2009 and Helen Minchie in 2006.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, June 13, 2015 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls. A service will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Steve Lape officiating. Burial will be in Seneca Union Cemetery in Valois at the convenience of the family.
