Obituary of Margaret Layton

Margaret S. "Markie" Layton, 103, of Montour Falls, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Bethany Manor in Horseheads. She was born in Montour Falls on November 26, 1910, the daughter of the late Jesse and Ellen (Pittman) Shepard. Margaret graduated from Elmira College with the Class of 1934 and received her Masters Degree from Mount Holy Oak College in South Hadley, MA. She went on to teach biology for many years until her retirement. Margaret was a member of the Naturalist Club. She was an avid birder, sports enthusiast, and enjoyed sewing and walking. She was predeceased by her husband, William Layton in 1988, and by three brothers, James, Albert and Robert Shepard. Margaret is survived by her brother, William H. Shepard, III of Horseheads; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and many friends at Bethany Village. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 22, 2014 at 11:00 am at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home with Lew Ann Giles officiating. Burial will follow in Montour Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call prior to the service on Monday from 10-11 am at the funeral home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls.
