Obituary of Steven Learn

Steven Brian Learn, 58, of Pine Valley Road, Pine Valley, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2012, in Horseheads, NY. He was born in Montour Falls on April 5, 1954. He is the son of Arlene Cope Learn and the late C. Wendell Learn. He is survived by his wife of almost 29 years Elizabeth J. (Osborne) Learn, his son Craig Wendell and Craig's fiancée Lily Goldman. Also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law Mike and Alice, and Doug and Angela, all of Odessa, NY, and by sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Rick Rava of Ridgebury Lake, PA and by sister Nancy Miranda-Bartolo of Alpine, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephew. Brian was a long-time member of the Odessa-Catharine United Methodist Church. He was formerly employed at the Chemung County Sewer District where he worked for just over 25 years as a Sewage Treatment Plant Operator; Grossman's Lumber in Big Flats, NY and Schuyler County Water Shed. Brian played basketball for Odessa-Montour School District for many years with his good friends Bob Messersmith, John Riley and Bob Gould. He worked on the family dairy farm in Odessa, NY for many years. He bowled on the Thursday Night Men's League at Paramount Lanes for several years. He enjoyed many sports including basketball, golf and fishing. Brian also thoroughly enjoyed watching Craig play sports such as soccer, baseball and swimming. He dearly loved his dogs Samantha and Princess who went everywhere with him. He had many accomplishments including building his own home in Pine Valley with his dad along side him through all of it. He also helped family members build their homes including the house at Ridgebury Lake for his mom and dad. Brian was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme grade four brain cancer in December 2006, when he had his first surgery, and battled it for six years. Cayuga Medical Center assisted him with this battle and we want to thank Dr. Bael and his staff for all their efforts to keep the cancer from returning. In October, 2011, Brian had his second tumor removed at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. We want to thank Dr. Fenstermaker and his staff for all their help as well. A memorial service celebrating the life of Brian will be held for family and friends on Saturday, September 22, 2012, at 11:00 AM at the Odessa-Catharine United Methodist Church, 305 Church Street, Odessa, NY 14869, with Rev. Sheila Price officiating.
