Obituary of Elinor M. Emmick

Elinor (Hoagland) Emmick, 101, passed away at her daughter's home in Snohomish, Wash., on Sept. 26, 2018. Mrs. Emmick was a native of Elmira, N.Y., and long-time resident of Montour Falls and Penn Yan. She and her late husband, Frank D. Emmick, Jr., created Emmick Motor Co. in 1946 and worked together in the automobile business for several years. Born to Bertha (Brewster) Hoagland and Franklin D. Hoagland in Canoe Camp, Pa., on August 30, 1917, Mrs. Emmick was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy (1933) and Elmira College (1938.) A gifted artist, Mrs. Emmick also attended Syracuse University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Albright School of Fine Arts in Buffalo. She and Frank were married at his aunt's home in Morris, Pa., on June 25, 1938. Mrs. Emmick was a civic activist who was passionate about local education and government. She served on the Montour School Board, Library Board, and in D.A.R. posts. She was an early member of the Conservative Party of New York and ran for the state assembly in 1970. In the 1980s, she and fellow local artists formed the Tumbling Waters Art Gallery in Montour Falls, located on the former site of Emmick Motor Co. She attended First Baptist Church, Montour Falls, and Lake Keuka Baptist Church in Penn Yan. She was baptized as a Christian at the age of 95. Mrs. Emmick is survived by her children, Frank D. Emmick III (Jeanne), Stephen K. Emmick (Celeste), Elaine Emmick Haft (Rustin); grandchildren, Jason G. Emmick, Laura Smith Emmick, Gus G. Emmick (Anne), Erin Haft Gardner (Dan), and Lauren Haft; great-grandchildren, Grace Emmick, Alexander Emmick, Nathaniel Emmick and Sarah Emmick; nephew, Jim Hoagland; niece, Justine "Tina" (Hoagland) Miller; several great- and great-great nieces and nephews, and many friends. Calling hours for Mrs. Emmick will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, 2018 at Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, N.Y., with private interment at Montour Falls Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 13. A public memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Lake Keuka Baptist Church, Penn Yan. Seating is limited. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lake Keuka Baptist Church, Penn Yan, or First Baptist Church, Montour Falls.
